American Pie 2, DVD

American Pie 2, 2001

American Pie 2 1

This is the sequel to American Pie.  It is the summer vacation and centers around a beach house.  The gang is all back one year after prom for this big adventure.

American Pie 2 is a raunchy comedy.  You will laugh.  If you liked the first one you will enjoy the second one.

I give this one a 4/5.

Smart People, DVD

Smart People, 2008

Smart People 1

I believe this film is written by a liberal who believes this is exactly how Republicans behave.  This is not a political film, but some of the actions in the film will leave you scratching your head.

Move past the slightly unrealistic writing and get to the actual story on this one.  The idiocracy of smart people and their lazy brother/uncle.  Thomas Haden Church as the brother gives a nice contrast to the self absorbed Professor, Denise Quaid.  Ellen Page does pretty well as the too intelligent for her own good daughter.

This is a  movie about a dysfunctional family with some members with high intelligence, but not necessarily socially function behaviors.

For its uniqueness this movie has something, but it isn’t a great movie.

I give this one a 3.5/5.

My Mom’s New Boyfriend, DVD

My Mom’s New Boyfriend, 2008

My Mom's New Boyfriend 4

I get the feeling that someone who was once in love with Meg Ryan felt sorry for her and decided to write a role for her.  That or Antonio Banderas wanted to make out with Meg Ryan and made this movie happen.

I love Meg Ryan, but her plastic surgeon should be taken out and shot.  She kind of has that Melanie Griffith look about her now and it isn’t a good look.

At the start of this movie I actually believed Meg Ryan had gotten that fat.

This is a spy movie, kind of.  It is a comedy of sorts.  It falls short.  It really isn’t that funny.  The story is ok overall.  I have definitely seen worse films.  This film has all of the elements, but it just isn’t very good.  It isn’t bad.  It just isn’t good.

I give this one a 3/5, but just barely.  The acting has its moments and it does have a story.

Prime, DVD

Prime, 2005

Prime 3

I absolutely do not understand why this movie is named Prime.  It is a great name, but I always think it is a movie about a mathematician until I start watching it.

Rafi, Uma Thurman, is a recent divorce and starts to date the much younger David, Bryan Greenberg.  We get to hear about some of their relationship in Rafi’s visits to her therapist, Meryl Streep.

The dynamic of the younger man and older woman relationship takes some extremely funny turns.  This is a very enjoyable movie.  You will laugh some and cringe a little, but in a good way.

I would give this movie a 4/5.

He’s Just Not That Into You, DVD

He’s Just Not That Into You, 2009

he's just not that into you 3

All of the silly things women tell themselves about a guy, all of the excuses they make up come down to just one thing.  He’s just not that into you.  If a guy wants to see you he will make it happen.

Is that the truth of the matter or is there more to it?

We follow the friendship of a hopeless woman and a guy who treat women as if they do not matter to him.  Will he teach her the truth about guys?

I liked this film quite a bit.  Who can’t relate to wishful thinking and hearing all of the excuses?  It is a film you can easily relate to.

I give this one a 4/5.

Two Weeks Notice, DVD

Two Weeks Notice, 2002

Two Weeks Notice 2

Sandra Bullock’s character Lucy Kelson works for Hugh Grant’s character George Wade.  Lucy wants to save the world, but is stuck doing menial tasks for her boss.

She finally gives up and puts in her two weeks notice.  Now George is suddenly struck with how much he needs her and must win her over.

This movie is exactly what you get when you put Sandra Bullock into a Hugh Grant film.  I am not sure how Sandra Bullock does it, but she can make any film not quite as good.  Honestly this one is a bit weak to begin with.

I give this one a 3/5.

Office Space, DVD

Office Space, 1999

Office Space 2

Anyone who has ever worked in an office will appreciate Office Space.  It is the perfect office comedy.  It is a cult classic.  It is a must see.  If nothing else you must see this film for all of the quotable lines.  How are you going to know what a TPS report is without seeing this film?

The office equipment doesn’t work, the boss is requiring overtime on the weekend, and then there are the Bobs.  It turns out that not caring is the best way to the top.

This movie gets a 5/5.

The Aristocrats, DVD

The Aristocrats, 2005

The Aristocrats 3

The Aristocrats is an entire film exploring a single joke.  It is a joke no one ever tells, but when they do it is a competition to see who can make the most insane, dirty version.

This film interviews comedians about their experiences with this particular joke.  It is the world’s dirtiest joke, The Aristocrats.

This is a rather interesting film all centered around a single joke.  A joke all comedians seem to know and few are willing to tell.  At least not in polite company.

I give this one a 4/5 for its informative value more than the joke itself.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, DVD

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, 1988

Steve Martin and Michael Caine are two con men.  They take advantage of those around them.  Especially rich women.

Dirty Rotten Scaundrals 4

Freddy Benson played by Steve Martin is a small time con man.  He is messing up Lawrence Jamison’s prince scam.  These two make a wager to see which one of them can get $50k out of the next woman they see.  The winner takes the prince scam and the loser goes away.

This movie is somewhat funny, but it truly shows the difference between Michael Caine’s comedy genius and Steve Martin’s humor.  The parts fit them perfectly.

I give this one a 3/5.

Orgazmo, DVD

Orgazmo, 1997

Orgazmo 4

From the creators of South Park comes Orgazmo.  Joe Young is a good Mormon on his missionary in Hollywood.  He needs funds in order to have his wedding.

Desperate to pay for the wedding his fiance wants Joe Young takes a movie role.  Turns out the role is in a porn movie.  Don’t worry Joe you just need to act while others do the dirty work.  Besides no one will ever see it.  The film turns into a huge success and Joe finds himself doing sequels.

This movie is really funny.  It is also very wrong.  Joe is such a sweet Mormon and it is his innocents against the backdrop of the porn movies that makes this film so hilarious.  Did I mention Ron Jeremy is in this movie.

I give this film a 4/5.
